TEHRAN (IQNA) – A program on “the scientific and social status and virtues of Imam Mohammad Baqir (AS)” was held in Uganda earlier this week.

According to the website of the Islamic Culture and Relations Organization (ICRO), the program was organized on the occasion of the Shia Imam’s birthday anniversary on March 8.

Mohammadreza Ghezelsofla, Iranian cultural attaché in the African country was invited to the program to introduce various aspects of the character of the fifth infallible Imam (AS) to the participants.

It was organized by the Association of Research and Islamic Studies of Kampala.

Noting that today’s scientific developments are the result of efforts by Imam Baqir (AS), the Iranian official said that the Imam was named al-Baqir (splitter) since he splitd knowledge.

He highlighted the virtues of the Imam (AS), saying that acting upon the Seerah and Sunnah of the Holy Prophet (PBUH), he revived the Nabawi teachings in the society of his time.

Elsewhere, Ghezelsofla stressed that research, cultural and religious activities should be implemented in such a way that will result in the promotion of knowledge and religious awareness among the youth.

He added that unity, avoiding extremism, true understanding of Islam, knowing enemies of Islam and awareness of evolutions and crises are necessary for today’s Muslims.

The period of the imamate of Imam Baqir (AS) was contemporary with the weakening of the Umayyad government and the struggle among them for power. In this period, Imam Baqir (AS) made a great scientific movement which reached its peak at the time of his son Imam Sadiq (AS). He was greater than anyone in his time in knowledge, piety, grandeur, and merits.

His narrations in religion, Seerah of the Holy Prophet (PBUH), Quranic sciences, moral conduct, and manner are more than what is remained from the children of Imam Hassan (AS) and Imam Hussain (AS). Thus, during his imamate, a great step was taken towards organization of Shia thought in different fields including ethics, fiqh, kalam, exegesis, etc.

Great scholars from the Sunni school of thought have attested to his scholarly and religious fame.
