TEHRAN (IQNA) – Master Mohammad Taqi Morovvat, a renowned Iranian Quranic figure, passed away on Wednesday.

Morovvat died in Toronto, Canada, after a long battle with a severe illness.

His death came on the day of Ashura, the tenth day of Muharram in the lunar Hijri calendar that marks the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (AS).

Born in 1944 in Tehran, Morovvat started learning the Quran with masters like Mulla Mohammad Baqer Fani and went on to become an eminent Quran reciter.

He also spent some time in Cairo to learn from senior Egyptian Qaris.

He was the first Iranian and Shia Muslim winning the top title at Malaysia’s international Holy Quran competition in 1973.

Master Morovvat was the first to establish choral Quran recitation sessions in Iran.
