Mothers, who usually give birth to babies, feed them and nurture them from the very first day play an important role in the process of a child’s upbringing, being the closest person to the babies during their childhood.

Ahl al-Bayt (literally meaning 'People of the House' a term used to refer to the extended family of the Islamic prophet Muhammad (PBUH)) maybe one of the best role models for proper Muslim upbringing.

Hazrat Fatima (SA), is the daughter of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), and the wife of Imam Ali (AS). She is an elite not just in her own time, but in the present and future. She was an infallible martyr. She is a symbol of piety, chastity and a real devotee of the Almighty Allah.

She is the mother of the only two Masters of the Youth of Paradise- Imam Hassan and Imam Hussain- and Hazrat Zainab (SA) and Umme - Kulthum (SA), and the mother of the 11 infallible Imams (Peace Be upon Them All). She has definitely proved her skills in bringing up children with distinguishing characteristics.

For one, the pivotal roles that the children of Hazrat Fatima (SA) played, throughout the historical event were the result of her outstanding upbringing and training.

The battle of Karbala is one of the best testimonies of the divine nature of her methods of child-rearing.

In this article we are going to examine Hazrat Fatima’s approaches adopted by her in bringing up her children.

Utmost love and compassion

Science suggests that warm and loving relationships with parents help children grow into compassionate adults. On the other hand, feeling unloved as a child can have long-lasting effects from lack of trust to mental health conditions in adulthood.

Hazrat Fatima (SA) who had been showered with the love and affection of her beloved father herself poured the same love and warmth upon her children.

Playing with children

Despite the fact that Islam has emerged in an ignorant society, approaches of the Prophet (PBUH) and his Traditions that were forwarded through him and the Infallibles (AS) are applicable and suitable for the people of all cultures and civilizations, at any eras.

It may be due to the fact that Islam deals directly with the common innate nature of man.

Playing with children and spending time with them had a very special and important place in the methods of child-upbringing of Fatima (SA), like it did with her father.

Psychologically speaking, playing helps children build imagination and creativity, stimulates healthy brain development, reduces anxiety, stress, and irritability, helps them learn about communicational structures, encourages independence, and improves physical fitness.

Adults, mostly parents, can also involve themselves wholeheartedly in these activities, in order to encourage the child.

It has been recorded that the Prophet (PBUH) often involved himself wholeheartedly in play with his grandchildren, accordingly, Imam Ali (AS) and Hazrat Fatima (SA) gave great attention to this childhood need, too.

Hazrat Fatima (SA) actively played with her children. Hazrat Fatima (SA) used to play as a very important tool in developing the bodies and souls of her children. She also enthused and inspired them into greatness and bravery through these entertaining activities.

It has been recorded that while playing with Imam Hassan (AS) and Imam Hussain (AS), Hazrat Fatima (SA) would swing them and recite poems.

Setting aside hardships

It is important to note that in spite of all the hardships Muslims and especially Hazrat Fatima and her family were going through, and problems and pains this great family suffered at the hands of the cruel, ignorant people of their times, within the family, they always shared very warm, affectionate and joyful times.

Being able to put aside all the pains and concerns while spending time with children and attending to their different needs is also another remarkable and distinguishing characteristic of Hazrat Fatima (SA). All of these very scientific methods played a very major role in bringing up their children as the bravest and most powerful people in human history.

Although Hazrat Fatima was martyred at a very young age, while she was only 18 years old, she played her role as a mother most perfectly and efficiently, leaving behind for the world a legacy of great and powerful heroes like Hassan (AS) and Hussain (AS) and Hazrat Zainab (SA) who in times to come, valiantly fought oppression and tyranny.
