Baghdad Hosting 9th Meeting of Islamic Awakening Supreme Council
According to Ali Akbar Velayati, the secretary general of the assembly, Muslim scholars and personalities from 22 countries are taking part in the gathering, al-Sumaria news reported.
Speaking to reporters Friday in a joint press conference with Ammar al-Hakim, Head of the Supreme Islamic Council of Iraq, he hoped that the meeting will help to strengthen Islamic unity and reinforce efforts to root out the elements of conspiracy and disunity in the region.
Elsewhere in his remarks, Velayati, who is also heads the Strategic Research Center of Iran's Expediency Council, underlined Iran’s policy of supporting legitimate governments and the oppressed people of regional countries like Iraq and Syria.
He stressed that Iran’s support for the two Arab countries is limited to political or advisory help at the request of their governments.
The Islamic Republic of Iran has stood by regional nations in the fight against extremist, Takfiri and terrorist currents in the region in the past 5 years, he went on to say.
