A Day When Mountains Will Be Like Carded Wool
What happens on that day is bigger than any earthquake and it has been described in Surah Al-Qari’ah.
Al-Qari’ah is the 101st chapter of the Quran that has 11 verses and is in the 30th chapter. It is Makki and the 30th Surah revealed to the Holy Prophet (PBUH).
Some interpreters say the Resurrection Day is called Al-Qari’ah (crushing) because it crushes hearts with fear and crushes the enemies of God with punishment. It can also be noted that on that day, the world will be crushed.
The Surah points to three main issues: That the Resurrection is a major and crushing event; that people will be scattered and confused on that day; and that people’s deeds will be measured and weighed with special scales.
From the beginning to the end, this chapter talks about what will happen on the Day of Judgment and what people will go through and face on that day.
Those whose good deeds are more than their sins will live a pleasant life forever and those who had more evil deeds and sins than good deeds will enter hell.
The Surah points to two major and frightening events on the Day of Judgment.
“On that Day people shall become like scattered moths.” (Verse 4) Based on this verse, people scatter and run away from one another on that day.
Also on the Resurrection Day, “the mountains will become as carded wool.” (Verse 5)
Another point mentioned in this Surah is that in order to attain salvation and paradise, one should act and live in this world in such a way so as to be worthy of entering paradise. “Those whose good deeds will weigh heavier (on scales) will live a pleasant life.” (Verses 6-7)
The use of the word scale in the plural form in Verse 6 may be because on that day, one’s deeds will be measured and weighed by various means and that there will be a special scale for measuring each deed.
