Quran Urges Respect for Environment: Al-Azhar Chief

IQNA – The grand imam of Egypt’s Al-Azhar Islamic Center said there are numerous verses in the Holy Quran inviting people to respect the environment.

Addressing the 28th Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC (COP 28) in the United Arab Emirates via video-conference, Sheikh Ahmed al-Tayeb stressed the need for enhancing efforts to confront global challenges, including climate change.

He said climate change and its adverse effects are one of the main challenges facing humanity today.  

Protecting the environment against destruction is necessary, he added, al-Ahram daily reported.

Highlighting the emphasis the Quran lays on the environment, al-Tayeb said the Holy Book urges believers to protect the earth and its living things.

Humanity has religious responsibility regarding the earth and the creatures on it, he went on to say.

God has cautioned mankind against corruption on earth, warning that he would face calamities, tragedies and diseases if corruption spreads on the planet, the senior cleric stated.

The 28th Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC (COP 28) is underway in Dubai, the UAE, with a view to building on previous successes and paving the way for future ambition to effectively tackle the global challenge of climate change.

The conference began on November 30 and will run through December 12.
