IQNA – The grand imam of Egypt’s Al-Azhar Islamic Center approached the fair and humane approach of Brazil to the developments in Palestine.

Al-Azhar chief Sheikh Ahmed al-Tayeb

Sheikh Ahmed al-Tayyeb, in a meeting with Brazil’s ambassador to Egypt, described Brasilia’s stance on Palestine and the Israeli war on Gaza as a fair and humanitarian approach.

He said it is consistent with the approach of Arab and Muslim countries and the freedom-loving people of the world, Ray al-Yawm daily reported.

He also referred to the activities of Al-Azhar and said the mission and message of the Islamic center is to promote peace in the world.

The Brazilian envoy, for his part, lauded Al-Azhar’s efforts to enhance values such as fraternity and peaceful coexistence.

The meeting in Cairo came as Brazil recalled its ambassador to occupied Palestine in a diplomatic rift over the Brazilian president’s comparison of Tel Aviv's actions in Gaza to the actions of Adolf Hitler.

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva criticized Israel’s military aggression on the Gaza Strip, calling it genocide and noting the disproportionate impact on civilians.

Lula's comments were made at an African Union summit in Addis Ababa, where he stated, “What's happening in the Gaza Strip isn't a war, it's a genocide.”
